Climate Investor One

Climate Investor One is an integrated financing mechanism designed to overcome barriers to renewable energy investment in low and lower-middle income countries. It combines a Development Fund for early-stage bankability, a Construction Fund to reduce debt costs and negotiation complexity, and a Re-financing Fund to attract institutional investors to de-risked projects. A pilot phase aims to deploy 300 MW of capacity and reduce 600ktCO2 emissions annually, with a goal to mobilize USD 2 billion in private finance by 2020.

• Climate Investor One addresses barriers to renewable energy in developing countries—such as lack of expertise, high construction debt costs, and difficulty attracting investors—by combining three facilities: a Development Fund, a Construction Fund, and a Re-financing Fund.

• A pilot program by Climate Investor One intends to deploy 300 MW of renewable energy capacity and reduce annual emissions by 600ktCO2, with projected capital cost reductions of 7-21% and consumer electricity cost reductions of 9-18% compared to typical projects.
• As of June 2017, Climate Investor One reached a first close of USD 412 million with partners from the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, and the UK, and it aims to mobilize at least USD 2 billion in new private finance by 2020.
