This fact sheet describes climate data tools and research funded by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) to support decision-makers in the Caribbean. • The CARIWIG online data portal provides open access to Caribbean climate data, including historical data from weather stations covering two 30-year time periods for variables such as rainfall, sunshine, temperature, vapour, and wind speed.
• CARIWIG offers three specific modeling tools: a Weather Generator (WG) for daily weather time series used in impact assessments; a Tropical Storm Model (TSM) for simulating tropical storms over storm tracks to assess precipitation and wind; and the CARIDRO drought tool for processing observed and modelled climate data to assess atmospheric and hydrological drought.
• Research using CARIWIG tools in specific Caribbean nations yielded the following results: in Belize, the tool assessed climate change effects on dengue fever, finding that an increase in days where minimum temperatures exceed 18°C could make conditions more favourable for the disease; in Jamaica, the model assessed river discharge during category 5 hurricanes, suggesting peak discharge likely occurs around 14 hours after storm onset; and in Cuba, research indicated the Las Tunas province can expect between 12-18 moderate to extreme droughts between 2011 and 2050.
• The Caribbean Climate Online Risk and Adaptation tool (CCORAL) is a web-based tool designed to help integrate climate change into policy and practice, advising decision-makers to focus on adaptation actions that perform well across a wide range of conditions due to the inherent uncertainty of climate projections.
