Climate and Development Knowledge Network Helping developing countries to design and deliver climate compatible development

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) provides research, technical assistance, and advocacy to help developing countries integrate climate resilience and low-carbon growth into their national policies. Operating across Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean, CDKN focuses on four strategic themes: climate compatible development strategies, access to climate finance, disaster risk management, and support for international climate negotiators from vulnerable nations. The network is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the Netherlands Foreign Ministry (DGIS).

• CDKN defines 'climate compatible development' as an approach that integrates adaptation, mitigation, and development by prioritising development goals and pursuing a 'triple win' of low-carbon paths, resilience, and poverty reduction.
• The network operates across four strategic priority themes: creating climate compatible development strategies and plans, improving access to climate finance for developing countries, strengthening resilience via climate-related disaster risk management, and supporting negotiators from the most climate-vulnerable and least developed countries.
• CDKN has supported policy changes in 23 countries and operates in more than 40 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean, disbursing US$30 million annually.
• In the area of climate finance, CDKN aims to help developing countries access the US$100 billion in finance agreed upon in the 2009 Copenhagen Accords, noting that these funds are currently only partly committed and available.
• CDKN provides specific support to the Least Developed Countries Group in UNFCCC negotiations through legal and technical briefing papers, strategy development, and a capacity-building programme involving e-learning and workshops.
• The network has implemented various country-specific projects, including supporting Rwanda's 'Fonerwa' national climate and environment fund, developing climate-resilient housing guidelines in Punjab, Pakistan, and assessing gender-based impacts of climate plans in India.
