CDKN Research Consultation Workshop report

This report details a research consultation workshop held by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) on 24 September 2010 at the Royal Society. The event gathered 40 UK academics and researchers to refine the CDKN research strategy, focusing on 'Climate Compatible Development' (CCD) and the creation of demand-led research to support decision-makers in developing countries.

• Workshop participants identified a critical gap in the integration of climate science into policy-making, noting that policy makers often lack the capacity to interpret scientific data, while scientists may not understand the specific spatial and temporal data requirements of policy makers.
• There is a noted divergence in adaptation research agendas between developed and developing nations, with the former focusing on technical risk management and the latter focusing on social institutions.
• Research on energy in developing countries has frequently neglected unresolved questions regarding energy access, leading to calls for more research on innovation and the institutional and financial arrangements needed to support it in least developed countries and transition economies.
• The consultation highlighted a failure in policy generation where available literature is not effectively applied to policy, and the private sector remains largely excluded from decision-making processes.
