COUNTRY SNAPSHOT December 2012 News from CDKN: How much does climate change cost Nepal?

This December 2012 fact sheet from the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) outlines technical assistance and research projects in Nepal aimed at calculating the economic costs of climate change, enhancing climate diplomacy, and improving knowledge management and disaster risk reduction.

• A project led by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MoEST) and supported by CDKN began in October 2012 to calculate the economic impact of climate change specifically within Nepal's water and agriculture sectors. The study aims to identify the costs of current climate variability and extremes, short-to-medium term risks to current plans, and long-term economic costs to help the government present climate change as a "development issue of highest priority for the country."
• CDKN has provided technical assistance since 2011 to help the Government of Nepal engage more strategically with UNFCCC negotiations. This support included training for the Core Negotiating Team (CNT) and facilitating coordination, which contributed to Nepal being elected chair of the LDC Group in the UNFCCC in May 2012 for the 2013-2014 period.
• The Nepal Climate Change Knowledge Management Centre (NCCKMC) completed a 12-month project with CDKN ending in August 2012 to increase its effectiveness and visibility. The project utilized policy dialogues and the creation of locally relevant products, such as the "Nepal Climate Update" e-bulletin, to provide reliable information to local stakeholders.
• Other active initiatives include the integration of climate indicators into the Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP) by WFP and ISET-Nepal, which tested new indicators in pilot areas involving approximately 1,000 households. Additionally, a research project launched in August 2012 by NDRI is assessing climate change impacts and proposing adaptation measures for the Koshi River Basin.
