The study finds that drought events in Las Tunas province, similar to the severe 2003-2005 event, are projected to become more frequent and intense through 2050, driven by reduced precipitation and increased evaporation from rising temperatures.

• Drought events similar to the severe event experienced in Las Tunas from 2003 to 2005 are projected to be more frequent and last longer between 2011 and 2050.
• The SPEI index indicates that droughts will become more intense and prolonged in the second half of the 2011-2050 period, as rising temperatures increase water loss through evaporation.
• Projections across seven regional climate model experiments show that the frequency of moderate or extreme drought lasting four or more consecutive months will range from 12 to 18 times between 2011 and 2050, which is higher than the frequencies observed from 1971 to 2000.
