How do gender approaches improve climate compatible development? Lessons from Peru

This policy brief describes a research project by Practical Action Consulting and the Institute of Development Studies, commissioned by CDKN, which examined the integration of gender dimensions into climate compatible development strategies within urban settings in Peru.

• The research focused on two of Peru's Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation Networks (GRIDES), which have successfully integrated climate adaptation and disaster risk measures into local government planning. The study observed that when women held leadership roles within these GRIDES, the resulting local government proposals incorporated an implicit gender approach.
• Despite the presence of implicit gender approaches, gender issues are often perceived as theoretical or applicable only to women. Because agencies lack an explicit understanding of gender, local plans fail to include concrete measures to address gender inequality.
• The brief identifies a significant knowledge gap regarding gender and climate compatible development in urban areas compared to rural areas. It recommends a broad range of actions involving academia, civil society, and government agencies to increase awareness and develop gender-sensitive approaches to improve outcomes for men, women, boys, and girls in urban environments.
