Charting a course toward climate compatible development - Seven years of CDKN (2010-2017)

This report, based on opening remarks by Sam Bickersteth at a July 2017 conference, reviews the activities of the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) from 2010 to 2017. It evaluates the progress of 'climate compatible development'—the principle that climate action should not hinder poverty reduction—and identifies systemic gaps in institutional capability, finance, and the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in developing nations.

• Between 2010 and 2017, CDKN focused on integrating climate and development goals, influencing policies and practices in 33 countries, with more significant changes occurring in 13 of those nations.
• CDKN provided substantial technical and legal support for international climate negotiations, training 1,208 individuals, generating 2,577 cases of legal, technical, and climate finance advice, and supporting 537 negotiators at international meetings.
• Despite the Paris Agreement, a significant emissions gap remains; there is a 14 GtCO²e gap to achieve the 2°C limit of 42Gt by 2030, requiring an annual decarbonization rate of 6.5% until 2100.
• Climate finance for developing countries was estimated at $42bn in the previous year, with a projection of $67bn by 2020, though this is surpassed by green bond issuance, which was expected to reach $120-200bn in 2017.
• While 24% of global power now comes from renewable energy and 48 countries committed to 100% renewables at COP22, progress on energy efficiency targets for 2030 is not on track.
