Social strategy games in communicating trade-offs between mitigation and adaptation in cities

This report examines the use of social strategy games as a research and communication tool to help people understand the complex trade-offs and synergies between climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in urban environments.

• Urban climate policy involves difficult-to-quantify trade-offs and interdependencies regarding greenhouse gas emission mitigation and climate change adaptation, specifically concerning green infrastructure, social equity, and urban structure densification.
• Research conducted through organized gaming sessions in Denmark, Finland, and the US indicates that social games are a promising, though methodologically challenging, way to communicate complex planning problems.
