Social strategy games in communicating trade-offs between mitigation and adaptation in cities

The report examines how social strategy games can be used to communicate the complex interdependencies and trade-offs involved in urban climate policy, specifically regarding mitigation and adaptation. Based on data from gaming sessions in Denmark, Finland, and the US, the study concludes that while methodologically challenging, social games are a promising way to address complex planning problems. This work was part of a broader project to integrate science into humanitarian work through participatory tools to manage global climate risks.

• Urban climate policy involves difficult-to-quantify trade-offs and interdependencies between mitigation and adaptation, such as the use of green infrastructure and urban densification, with significant gaps remaining in how decisions are made between these strategies.
