Opportunities for triple-wins development in coastal Belize

This policy brief discusses the application of a 'triple wins' matrix methodology in coastal Belize to identify policies that simultaneously address climate adaptation, mitigation, and economic development, specifically highlighting the potential of mangrove conservation and restoration.

• Climate change is causing serious adverse effects on forests and coral reefs in Belize, while increasing the frequency and intensity of severe weather events. These factors hinder the country's primary priorities of reducing poverty and promoting social and economic sustainable development, necessitating a shift toward a more resilient economy and society.
• The 'triple wins' matrix methodology, developed by a CDKN-funded project and tested in Belize, Ghana, Kenya, and Vietnam, is designed to identify policies that can achieve adaptation, mitigation, and development goals concurrently.
• In Belize, the protection and conservation of mangroves, specifically along the Placencia Lagoon, are identified as actions that can lead to 'triple wins'.
