Identifying opportunities for climate-smart agriculture investments in Africa

This research paper proposes and applies a rapid screening methodology to evaluate the potential of National Agriculture and Food Security Investment Plans (NAFSIPs) in 14 African countries to generate climate change benefits across adaptation and mitigation.

• The study analyzed NAFSIPs across 14 countries and found that approximately 60% of planned activities are expected to provide benefits for slow-onset climate change, 19% for climate change mitigation, and 18% for adaptation to extreme events. Every NAFSIP reviewed demonstrated potential benefits for both the mitigation of climate change and adaptation to extreme events.
• NAFSIPs are structured around four primary pillars: the expansion of reliable water control systems and sustainable land management; the enhancement of trade-related capacities and rural infrastructure for market access; the improvement of responses to food emergency crises and food supply; and the advancement of technology adoption, dissemination, and agricultural research.
• Of the 14 countries screened in the study, 11 have National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs). Additionally, many NAFSIPs include programs that support agriculture value chains or the commercialization of the agricultural sector by directly involving smallholders.
