Analyzing Vulnerability of the Belize Coastal Tourism Sector

This report describes a project to analyze the vulnerability of Belize's coastal tourism sector to climate change, focusing on the ecosystems—such as coral reefs, mangroves, and beaches—that support the industry and local livelihoods.

• The tourism industry in Belize relies on coral reefs, mangroves, and beaches, but its growth is often linked to habitat degradation that threatens these same resources.
• The project aims to address three primary goals: assessing the vulnerability of the tourism system and its dependent ecosystems to climate change, evaluating how current policies impact climate-compatible tourism development, and identifying necessary policy reforms and adaptation strategies at local and national scales.
• To identify priority areas for adaptation investment, the report aggregates data from previous vulnerability assessments concerning tourism, mangroves, and the coastal zone to map the current status and vulnerability factors of Belize's coastal areas used for or designated for tourism.
