Climate trends in Ethiopia: Summary of ACCRA research in three sites

Since the 1960s, Ethiopia has seen mean annual temperature increases of 0.5-1.3°C and a decrease in cold nights. Precipitation trends from 1981-2000 show declining short rains (Feb-Apr) and slight increases in long rains (Jun-Aug) and late-year rains (Oct-Nov), potentially threatening food security. Additionally, flooding has become more common, with major events in 1997 and 2006.

• National climate trends in Ethiopia since the 1960s indicate that mean annual temperatures have risen by 0.5 to 1.3°C, while the frequency of cold nights associated with dry season frost has decreased significantly across all seasons.
• Between 1981 and 2000, there was a declining trend in short rains (February to April), while long rains (June to August) and rainfall in October and November showed slight increases. These trends may negatively affect food security due to the reliance on rain-fed agriculture.
• Flood events are reported to be increasing in frequency, with notable disruptions occurring in 1997 and 2006.
