Green Industrialization in Africa: Advancing Emerging Technologies and Innovation

This policy brief argues that Africa can drive economic transformation and a just transition by leveraging its critical minerals (such as cobalt in the DRC) and renewable energy potential through the development of innovation ecosystems. It highlights existing momentum in tech hubs and universities in countries like Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Morocco as a foundation for developing green technologies for local and global markets.

• Africa faces the simultaneous challenge of decarbonizing existing industries and establishing new industrial capacity, despite having a low contribution to global emissions. To leverage its renewable energy resources and critical minerals for the global clean energy transition, the continent must invest in innovation ecosystems that connect policymakers, manufacturing firms, research hubs, and startups.
• Africa has significant untapped resources for green technology, including solar potential, coastal deserts for green hydrogen, and cobalt reserves in the Democratic Republic of Congo for battery production. This is supported by a growing technology sector and an increase in science and technology specialized universities and tech hubs, specifically in Morocco, South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya.
• The document is part of a four-part ACET series on green industrialization and economic transformation. This series uses research and stakeholder discussions regarding critical minerals, renewable energy, digital public infrastructure, and emerging technologies to provide policymakers with evidence-based analysis and recommendations to overcome bottlenecks to a just transition.
