The PRINCE research project (2015–2018), led by Statistics Sweden with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) as a key partner, developed a new set of consumption-based environmental indicators for Sweden. By linking the EXIOBASE3 multiregional input-output (MRIO) model with Swedish national environmental-economic accounts, the project provided detailed data on where the impacts of Swedish consumption fall globally and across various product groups, moving beyond simple awareness-raising to provide policy-relevant information.

This working paper introduces the Resources and Energy Analysis Programme (REAP), an input-output-based software tool developed by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) to calculate environmental pressures associated with consumption activities, primarily within the United Kingdom.

This report, produced by the Stockholm Environment Institute for the think tank Cogito, analyzes the environmental impact of total consumption in Sweden and four specific municipalities: Gothenburg, Linköping, Malmö, and Stockholm. Using the Resources and Energy Analysis Programme (REAP) tool, the report compares consumption-based emissions—which include imported goods—against traditional national reporting, highlighting the significant gap between the two and the unsustainability of the Swedish lifestyle.
