Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Inventory Report For Calendar Years 2006 & 2007

This report details the carbon dioxide (CO2) inventory of the World Resources Institute (WRI) for the calendar years 2006 and 2007, outlining emission sources, calculation methodologies, and the organization's efforts to achieve a "net zero" emissions balance through internal management and the purchase of offsets.

• WRI's total CO2 emissions increased from 1,125 metric tons in 2006 to 1,288 metric tons in 2007. These figures represent increases of approximately 6% and 21% respectively over the 2000 base year emissions. The growth is primarily attributed to a roughly 33% increase in staff during 2006-2007, leading to higher travel-related emissions, as well as the expansion of WRI's office area in 2007.
• To achieve its "net zero" emissions goal, WRI utilized different offset mechanisms for 2006 and 2007. In 2006, it used the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), a voluntary U.S.-based program. In 2007, WRI shifted to a compliance market, purchasing Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). These 2007 credits were sourced from a wind energy project in India and a landfill gas to energy project in China.
