The State of Electric School Bus Adoption in the US

As of June 2022, there were 12,720 committed electric school buses across 38 US states, representing approximately 2-3% of the national fleet. California leads adoption, and while deployment is high in communities of color and areas with high PM2.5 pollution, it remains lower in the lowest-income school districts.

• As of June 2022, there were 12,720 committed electric school buses in 38 US states, which is approximately two to three percent of the total US school bus fleet. This includes 455 school districts that have committed to adding electric buses, a 76% increase from the summer of 2021.
• A single contract between bus dealer Midwest Transit Equipment and manufacturer SEA Electric, announced in December 2021, accounts for a massive portion of the growth, promising to repower 10,000 school buses to electric over five years.
