Demo Day 2019

The World Resources Institute and Fledge's Land Accelerator supports entrepreneurs in restoring degraded land to combat climate change. The 2019 cohort featured 14 businesses from eight African countries, focusing on sustainable products like organic fertilizers, biofuels, and agroforestry. The initiative is grounded in the potential for sustainable land use to generate US$2.3 trillion and 70 million jobs globally by 2030.

• Developing sustainable food and land use business models is estimated to be worth up to US$2.3 trillion and could create more than 70 million jobs globally by 2030, according to the Business and Sustainable Development Commission.
• The Land Accelerator's 2019 cohort included 14 African entrepreneurs from 8 countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Niger, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. These entrepreneurs participated in a 6-day intensive workshop and presented their businesses to financiers and investors.
• The Land Accelerator supports various restoration-based businesses, including those producing gum arabic and livestock feed in Niger (Addax), freeze-dried food in Ghana (Agromyx), honey and beeswax in Ethiopia (Apinec), neem-based pesticides and soaps in Niger (E3D), organic fertilizers in Kenya (EcoH Holdings and KOFAR Ltd), sugarcane-waste biofuel in Kenya (E-moto Limited), piped irrigation in Kenya (Expression Global), coconut husk charcoal briquettes in Kenya (Kencoco), land restoration offsets in Zimbabwe (Rejuvenate Umhlaba!), dried cassava leaves in Rwanda (Shekina), a commercial tree nursery in South Africa (Shoots & Roots), honey and cashews in Ghana (Tilaa Ltd), and tree seeds and seedlings in Uganda (Tree Resource Enterprises).
