Information for Climate Change Adaptation

This research paper by the World Resources Institute identifies barriers to the use of climate adaptation information in South Asia and served as the background document for a regional workshop aimed at improving information systems and investments.

• The 'adaptation information agenda' in South Asia is obscured by the complexity of climate vulnerability, the uncertainty of impacts, and the long time-frame of global warming. Consequently, information is often supply-driven—shaped by researcher interests and available data—rather than tailored to user needs, making it difficult for users to access, understand, and apply.
• To ensure effective long-term adaptation in South Asia, there is a need for improved systems regarding the production, management, use, dissemination, and learning of information, which will likely require the development of significant new capacities.
• The paper was developed using desk and interview research conducted by the World Resources Institute between November 2011 and February 2012, supplemented by feedback from a roundtable at the UNFCCC Conference of Parties-17 in Durban, South Africa.
