Bhopal Introduces India’s First Fully Automated Bicycle Sharing System with Dedicated Lanes

A case study by the World Resources Institute (WRI) detailing the launch of India's first fully automated public bicycle sharing (PBS) system in Bhopal, which integrates dedicated bike lanes to improve safety and solve last-mile connectivity to public transport.

• In June 2017, Bhopal launched a fully automated public bicycle sharing (PBS) system, the first of its kind in India to include segregated bike lanes. The initial infrastructure consists of 500 bicycles, 60 docking stations, and 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) of dedicated lanes designed to enhance rider safety.
• The system was designed by WRI and partners to address the 'last-mile problem' by linking residential and commercial nodes to the Bhopal Bus Rapid Transit System. Within the first five months of operation, the system registered over 25,000 users, with women accounting for more than half of the membership.
• There are plans to expand the dedicated bike lane network in Bhopal to over 50 kilometers (31 miles) in the coming years, which would make it the most extensive network of its kind in India. This model is now being explored by other PBS systems, such as the one in Mysore.
