Ethiopia Saves Hundreds of Lives by Improving Road Safety

WRI has supported Ethiopia in implementing a "Safe System" approach to road safety, contributing to the development of the National Road Safety Strategy (2021-2030) and the Non-Motorized Transport Strategy (2020-2029). These initiatives aim to reduce traffic fatalities by 50% by 2030. Early results show a decrease in fatal crashes nationwide from 3,628 (2019-2020) to 3,149 (2021-2022), and a stabilization of road deaths in Addis Ababa.

• Ethiopia's National Road Safety Strategy (2021-2030) targets a 50% reduction in traffic fatalities by 2030 using a "Safe System" approach, which prioritizes urban design and road improvements over attempts to change human behavior.
• National data indicates a decline in fatal crashes, with the Federal Police Commission reporting 3,149 fatal crashes between 2021 and 2022, down from 3,628 between 2019 and 2020. In Addis Ababa, road deaths have stabilized after a period of increase.
• The Non-Motorized Transport Strategy (2020-2029) focuses on investing in public transport and safe infrastructure for walking and cycling, specifically addressing the needs of women, children, and people with disabilities to improve road safety and reduce air pollution and climate change.
