A statement by Trend Asia and a global coalition of civil society organizations arguing that large-scale forest biomass combustion for energy is not carbon neutral, harms biodiversity, violates community rights, and obstructs the transition to clean energy. The signatories call for the cessation of forest biomass expansion and the removal of related subsidies.

• Large-scale forest biomass combustion is not a carbon-neutral process and releases significant amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The time required for forests to regrow and reabsorb this carbon—ranging from decades to centuries—is too slow to meet the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting temperature increases to below 1.5°C.
• Current carbon accounting rules are flawed because they treat biomass combustion as a zero-emission technology in the energy sector. This approach shifts the emission responsibility to the producers who log the forests rather than the consumers, often underestimating the actual emissions in national carbon balances.
• The use of forest biomass for energy threatens biodiversity and climate resilience by increasing deforestation and degrading forest ecosystems. This includes the harmful practice of converting natural forests and other ecosystems into monoculture plantations to obtain biomass, which impairs the forest's ability to provide essential services like clean drinking water and flood protection.
• Biomass demand negatively impacts local communities by exacerbating land conflicts and land grabbing, which threatens the rights, livelihoods, and cultural values of indigenous and local peoples. Additionally, biomass production and combustion facilities, often located in socio-economically disadvantaged areas, cause air pollution that increases respiratory diseases.
• Forest biomass hinders the transition to clean energy by extending the operational life of coal-fired power plants through co-firing. Furthermore, it diverts investment and government incentives away from lower-emission renewable technologies, such as wind and solar power, because biomass requires ongoing subsidies and raw material costs.
• The signatories demand that governments, financial institutions, companies, and civil society stop the expansion of the forest biomass energy industry and eliminate subsidies for this energy source, advocating instead for the protection and restoration of natural forests.
