SEI INITIATIVE

The SEI Gender and Social Equity Programme is a Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) initiative designed to integrate gender, social equity, and power relations into the organization's research, policy analysis, and internal operations to advance sustainable development.

• The SEI Gender and Social Equity Programme aims to address knowledge and policy gaps to inform sustainable development policy through three primary tasks: mainstreaming gender and social equity within SEI's internal projects and operations, launching new research projects with a gender and social equity lens, and communicating findings to stakeholders to enable transformative governance.
• The programme is supporting three specific scoping studies: one examining how small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in the GreenEcoNet platform can integrate gender and social equity into greening their businesses; one studying the 30% gender pay gap in Estonia's agriculture and forestry sectors; and one using agent-based modelling to simulate sustainability pathways to help transform Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) monitoring for greater inclusivity.
• SEI is working to adapt its technical modelling tools, specifically the Water Evaluation and Planning system (WEAP) and the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning system (LEAP), to better incorporate gender and social equity issues and produce insights on the creation and transformation of power.
• The initiative includes an internal institutional effort to mainstream gender and social equity by assessing SEI's existing gender-related knowledge and expertise, creating a guidance document for projects, and integrating gender variables into the project cycle from budgeting to evaluation.
