FACT SHEET Dataprogram: Resources and Energy Analysis Programme (REAP)

The Resources and Energy Analysis Programme (REAP) is an environmental analysis tool that uses an environmentally extended input-output model to assess the global environmental impact of consumption at national, regional, and local levels. It tracks greenhouse gases, ecological footprints, and energy sources across the entire life cycle of products and services, including imports. The tool includes a scenario function to model the effects of political decisions, population changes, and shifts in consumption or transport habits. Originally developed in the UK in 2006, a Swedish version was introduced in April 2011.

• REAP is designed to capture the full environmental impact of consumption, which is often significantly higher than the impact of domestic production because it includes emissions from the production and transport of imported goods in other countries.
• The tool provides data on three primary environmental indicators: energy sources, the ecological footprint, and greenhouse gases, specifically carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and F-gases.
• REAP utilizes a 'four-region' environmentally extended input-output model that tracks the flow of goods and services between Sweden and three other regions across 178 industries classified by the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system.
• The program includes a scenario tool that allows users to simulate how changes in population, housing standards, transport habits, or energy sources affect CO2 emissions and the ecological footprint.
• The tool was first developed in the UK in February 2006 in collaboration with WWF-UK and the Centre for Urban and Regional Ecology (CURE), and a Swedish version was launched in April 2011 with funding from WWF Sweden.
