Development of the Environmental Strategy and Action Plan of Bosnia and Herzegovina BiH ESAP 2030+

This fact sheet describes the development of the Environmental Strategy and Action Plan of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH ESAP 2030+), a project supported by the Stockholm Environment Institute and funded by the Embassy of Sweden to align the country's environmental frameworks with European Union policies.

• The BiH ESAP 2030+ is designed to provide environmental authorities with defined strategic goals and feasible actions, align legal and institutional frameworks with European Union environmental policies, identify financial priorities for domestic and international funding, and increase environmental awareness among the business sector and general public. In the long term, the project aims to support Bosnia and Herzegovina's membership in the European Union and improve citizen health and the state of the environment.
• The preparation of the strategy takes place between September 2019 and spring 2022. The final output will consist of four jurisdiction-specific strategies and action plans covering the BiH level, the Federation of BiH (FBiH), Republika Srpska (RS), and Brčko District (BD).
• The development process employs a participatory approach involving 28 thematic working groups (seven per jurisdiction) meeting six times, alongside two rounds of public consultations. The process includes assessing the current environmental situation, defining policy, strengthening the capacity of public officials, and cooperating with NGOs.
