CONTRIBUTION DETERMINEE AU NIVEAU NATIONALE - TCHAD

The Government of Chad's updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2021-2030 outlines a strategy to transition toward a climate-resilient, low-carbon economy. The document focuses on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy efficiency and reforestation, while prioritizing adaptation in sectors such as agriculture, livestock, and water management to protect vulnerable populations from extreme weather events.

Total projections for 2021-2030 exceed 5.002 billion USD, with a maximum potential cost of 14.169 billion USD.
• Chad has committed to the Bonn Challenge, aiming to reforest 5 million hectares by 2030. This includes 3.5 million hectares of shrub savannas in the Sahelian zone and 1.5 million hectares of wooded savannas in the Sudanese zone.
• The document identifies extreme weather events—specifically droughts, floods, and heatwaves—as severe threats to natural resources and livelihoods. The country is described as one of the most vulnerable globally, having been classified as the most endangered among 186 evaluated countries in a climate vulnerability study.
• Energy consumption in Chad is heavily dominated by wood fuels (96.5%), leading to deforestation exceeding 90% of the national heritage since 1970. To mitigate this, the NDC proposes promoting biogas, solar energy, and the distribution of 3 million improved wood stoves and 1.5 million charcoal stoves.
