SUMERNET PLUS

The SUMERNET PLUS fact sheet describes a transboundary programme running from July 2025 to December 2029, funded by the Swedish Government. The initiative aims to enhance climate resilience in the Mekong Region through scientifically robust research, inclusive policy development, and the adoption of sustainable practices by the private sector.

• SUMERNET PLUS is a regional programme operating from July 2025 to December 2029, funded with 54 million SEK from the Swedish Government via the Embassy of Sweden in Thailand. It seeks to support a "just, inclusive and sustainable transition for enhanced climate resilience" in the Mekong Region, incorporating human rights-based approaches and gender equality.
• The programme focuses on three primary thematic areas: exploring nexus interactions and trade-offs among sectors like water, energy, agriculture, and forests; building socio-ecological resilience through partnerships; and developing scalable solutions for just sustainable transitions involving marginalized groups, youth, and Indigenous peoples.
• SUMERNET PLUS will distribute 34 grants ranging from SEK 150,000 to 2,000,000 (approximately US$ 15,000-200,000). These grants are categorized into six types: scoping study, rapid response, joint study, seed innovation, innovation (multi-year, multi-country action pilots), and fellowship grants for early career professionals.
• The programme's operational strategy includes capacity building for researchers and policymakers in climate resilience and financial management, as well as policy dialogues intended to amplify local voices at regional forums such as ASEAN, the Mekong River Commission, and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation.
