Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation in National Policies, Strategies and Action Plans

This study examines the integration of climate change adaptation into sectoral policies using a 'nexus' approach to water challenges in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt, highlighting the gap between climate risks and national water planning in the MENA region.

• The MENA region is projected to be among the most severely affected by climate change regarding its water sector, facing reduced water availability due to lower precipitation, increased agricultural demand from higher temperatures, and compromised system reliability due to increasing variability.
• National water planning in the MENA region has largely ignored climate change and failed to mainstream adaptation. This is driven by a misconception that climate change will only materialize in the distant future and that scenarios are too uncertain, despite existing high climate risks and model consensus on decreasing precipitation.
• Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt can advance the Arab Strategy for Water Security by sharing experiences in water-related adaptation and energy-related mitigation, and by collaborating to access financial support from climate adaptation funds.
