Transición justa sector carne

This report outlines pathways for a just transition in the meat sector, specifically focusing on national markets in the Global North. It argues that while a shift away from industrial meat production and high consumption is urgently needed for climate, health, and biodiversity reasons, such transitions must be planned inclusively to protect vulnerable stakeholders and ensure equitable distribution of costs and benefits.

• The report argues that a shift toward plant-based diets and away from industrial meat production is urgently required in regions with high animal product consumption due to significant impacts on climate, air and water quality, biodiversity, human health, and animal welfare.
• A just transition approach is necessary because policies that restrict production practices or increase meat prices can significantly impact society, as meat supply chains support many livelihoods and are tied to cultural traditions. Such an approach aims to distribute costs and benefits equitably and protect the most vulnerable stakeholders, which may increase public support for the transition.
• While the concept of just transitions is well-established in the energy sector, it is only beginning to be recognized in food production. The report identifies key stakeholders affected by this transition, including consumers, farmers, workers, communities, and companies, and proposes five guiding principles for policymakers to phase out industrial meat production and consumption.
