Adaptive capacity determinants in developed states: examples from the Nordic countries and Russia

The paper analyzes adaptive capacity in the Nordic countries and Russia, noting that determinants in these industrialised states differ systematically from those in mixed subsistence-cash based communities, such as those in Arctic Canada. It identifies internal disparities in adaptive capacity based on location (peripheral versus central) and national context (Nordic versus Russian), specifically regarding economic resources, diversification, infrastructure, and technology access.

• Determinants of adaptive capacity in industrialised states differ systematically from those found in mixed subsistence-cash based communities, such as those in Arctic Canada.
• Within the studied region, adaptive capacity varies between peripheral and central locations concerning economic resources and diversification, and between Nordic and Russian cases regarding technology and infrastructure access.
• Improving the understanding of adaptive capacity determinants in resource-dependent communities requires more contextualisation and broad comparison across various political and administrative systems.
