Building shared understanding and capacity for action: insights on climate risk communication from India, Ghana, Malawi and Mongolia

This article examines climate risk communication strategies in Ghana, India, Malawi, and Mongolia, highlighting that co-generating knowledge with local communities and using locally relevant terms are essential for overcoming the poor mobilization of vulnerable groups and the misinterpretation of scientific findings.

• Ineffective communication regarding climate risk has led to the incorrect interpretation of scientific data on climate change and has hindered the ability to mobilize vulnerable populations to create suitable response actions.
• Research in Ghana, India, Malawi, and Mongolia indicates that presenting complex data in terms that are locally relevant is essential for a shared understanding of climate risk. Furthermore, social learning and the co-generation of knowledge between researchers and local communities are vital for creating risk communication methods that fit the specific context.
