Cascading hydroclimatic hazard impacts

A study on Sweden from 2005 to 2022 found that hydroclimatic hazards caused EUR 8.4 billion in economic losses in the agriculture, electricity, and insurance sectors, with floods causing the most damage (EUR 4.1 billion).

• Between 2005 and 2022, combined hydroclimatic hazards caused EUR 8.4 billion in economic damage across the agriculture, electricity, and insurance sectors in Sweden. Flood-related damage was the largest contributor at EUR 4.1 billion, followed by drought-induced supply shortages at EUR 2.9 billion and heatwave impacts at EUR 2.3 billion.
• At the municipal level in Sweden, there are moderate to strong associations between monthly climate indices and annual supply variables, with R2 values ranging from 0.39 to 0.62.
