Climate Risks and Resilience in Southeast Asia Ricescapes

This case study examines climate risks and the role of intangible cultural heritage in supporting the resilience of UNESCO-designated ricescapes in the Philippines and Indonesia, specifically focusing on the Ifugao and Balinese regions.

• The Hungduan and Mayoyao ricescapes in the Philippines and the Jatiluwih ricescape in Indonesia face climate risks from intense precipitation and droughts, which result in reduced crop yields.
• Resilience in agricultural activities is strengthened by social capital and community bonds, including mutual support, cooperation, and shared labour. Intangible assets for coping with climate pressures and maintaining community well-being are sourced from relatives, neighbours, family, organized farming groups, and customary villages.
• Achieving resilience in rice farming requires a combination of community-based efforts, diverse coping strategies, innovation in Indigenous farming, effective governance and leadership, a balance of formal and informal support, and alignment between national and local disaster preparedness.
