Climate Risks and Resilience in Southeast Asia Ricescapes

The case studies identify that the Hungduan and Mayoyao ricescapes in the Philippines and the Jatiluwih ricescape in Indonesia face climate risks from droughts and intense precipitation, which reduce yields. Resilience is bolstered by intangible assets, including community bonds, social capital, and spiritual dimensions, which facilitate shared labour and mutual support. The findings suggest that achieving resilience requires a combination of diverse coping strategies, community-based efforts, and a balance between formal and informal support mechanisms, leading to nine policy recommendations for preserving indigenous farming traditions and improving disaster preparedness.

• The ricescapes in Ifugao and Bali are vulnerable to climate risks, specifically droughts and intense precipitation, which result in reduced crop yields.
• Resilience in agricultural activities is strengthened by social capital and community bonds, with intangible assets sourced from family, relatives, neighbours, customary villages, and organized farming groups.
• Effective resilience for indigenous rice farming requires a multifaceted approach including community-based efforts, innovation in farming, effective leadership, and the alignment of local and national disaster response.
