BUSINESS STRATEGY SIMULATION FOR A TRANSITIONING ENERGY SECTOR

Newtonian Shift is a room-sized board game and workshop developed by the Advanced Energy Centre (AEC) at MaRS and RMI's Electricity Innovation Lab (e-Lab). It simulates multiple years of energy-sector transformation in a single day, allowing 20-30 players to explore the effects of new technologies, policies, and business models from the perspectives of utilities, government, and customers. The program has engaged over 600 sector leaders across North America, including organizations such as CAISO and the New York Power Authority.

• Newtonian Shift is a simulation workshop that allows participants to experience the energy transition from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders, including government, utilities, new market entrants, communities, large energy consumers, and private customers.
• The workshop is designed to help organizations test new partnerships and business models while analyzing the drivers of change and the evolution of the electricity system over coming decades.
• The program has been delivered to more than 600 sector leaders in North America, with clients including the Ontario Ministry of Energy, Siemens, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).
• The simulation aims to provide participants with a broader view of the energy ecosystem, highlight organizational biases, and illustrate the tension between short-term and long-term priorities.
