BUSINESS STRATEGY SIMULATION FOR A TRANSITIONING ENERGY SECTOR

This fact sheet describes 'Newtonian Shift', an immersive business strategy gaming workshop developed by the Advanced Energy Centre (AEC) at MaRS and Rocky Mountain Institute’s (RMI) Electricity Innovation Lab (e-Lab). The workshop uses a room-sized board game to simulate years of energy-sector transformation in a single day, allowing participants to test business models and partnerships while experiencing the transition from the perspectives of various stakeholders.

• Newtonian Shift is a business strategy workshop designed as a room-sized board game that simulates multiple years of energy-sector transformation in one day. It allows participants to explore the impacts of policies, partnerships, business models, and new technologies from the perspectives of government, utilities, new market entrants, communities, large energy consumers, and private customers.
• The workshop is delivered in two formats: as an enterprise-level session for a single team or organization, or as a mixed stakeholder session involving participants from multiple different organizations.
• The program has been delivered to over 600 sector leaders across North America, including specific entities such as the New York Power Authority (NYPA), the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), Siemens, and the Ontario Ministry of Energy.
• The workshop aims to provide participants with several strategic takeaways, including a broader view of the energy ecosystem, an understanding of the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration, the ability to experience the sector from stakeholder perspectives to develop empathy, and an appreciation of the tension between long-term and short-term priorities.
