A Caribbean Regional Transition Scenario

This report by RMI outlines strategies and a toolkit for Caribbean policymakers and energy leaders to accelerate a just and equitable transition from aging, diesel-based energy models to resilient renewable energy systems, emphasizing the urgency of the transition due to climate impacts and the importance of the 2025 window for revising Nationally Determined Contributions ahead of COP30.

• The primary energy challenge in the Caribbean is the need to replace aging, inefficient, and unaffordable diesel-based energy models with systems that are affordable, resilient, and evolvable. While the region has seen successful first-of-their-kind renewable energy projects, overall progress has been slow and few clean energy projects reach the market for investment.
• Accelerating the energy transition is critical for maintaining essential services and sustainable economic growth, especially as the region faces climate-driven threats including intensifying storms, changing weather patterns, and sea level rise.
• The year 2025 is identified as a pivotal moment for transition planning, specifically as countries update their Nationally Determined Contributions before COP30. Success depends on strong political leadership, ambitious targets, and the creation of enabling environments through transparent regulatory frameworks and robust policies.
