Unlocking India's Green Hydrogen Exports

This report by RMI analyzes India's potential to become a cost-competitive exporter of green hydrogen and its derivatives, focusing on market demand in the EU and East Asia and the strategic enablers required to translate production capacity into bankable export projects.

• The European Union and East Asia are projected to import between 3.4 and 6 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030. India is positioned as one of the most cost-competitive suppliers, with a delivered cost to Rotterdam of US$794/t, placing it alongside Brazil and Chile.
• To establish itself as a reliable supplier, India must address gaps in infrastructure, financing, and regulation. RMI identifies four critical trade enablers: infrastructure preparedness, standards and certifications, strategic partnerships and global agreements, and trade and financial de-risking mechanisms.
• RMI provides six strategic recommendations for India to increase export volumes: forming trade partnerships with the EU, Japan, and South Korea for long-term offtake; harmonizing certifications with global standards; developing port infrastructure with investments from Germany, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea; expanding demand aggregation models via SECI and H2Global; establishing green shipping corridors to Singapore, Rotterdam, and Busan; and creating dedicated financing mechanisms through export credit agencies and multilateral institutions.
