Decarbonising the Indian transport sector: pathways and policies

This report analyzes pathways for decarbonising India's transport sector—its fastest-growing emission source—to reach zero emissions by 2050. It explores two primary paradigms: scaling up rail transport and electrifying road transport, while identifying key policy levers such as urban planning and modal shifts to public transport.

• The transport sector in India is the country's fastest-growing source of carbon emissions, contributing 13.5 per cent of energy-related CO2 emissions. Within this sector, road transport is the dominant consumer of energy, accounting for 90 percent of final energy consumption.
• To align with the Paris Agreement and reach zero emissions by 2050, the report analyzes two non-exclusive decarbonisation pathways for India's transport sector: one centered on the scaling up of rail transport and another focused on the electrification of road transport.
• Achieving these high-ambition scenarios requires ambitious policy packages and financing. Potential policy interventions include alternative fuels, a modal shift toward public transport, the electrification and improved efficiency of transport systems, and innovative urban planning.
