Tracking climate mitigation efforts in 30 major emitters

A report by NewClimate Institute, IIASA, and FTSE Russell analyzing climate mitigation efforts across 30 major emitting countries and regions, finding that current policy projections are insufficient to meet Paris Agreement goals.

• Emissions trends in the 30 analyzed economies are not aligned with the Paris Agreement goals for the post-2020 period. While global emissions need to decrease by 7.6% annually until 2030 to meet these goals, emissions in the group of 30 economies are projected to rise by an average of about 0.4% per year from 2021 to 2030.
• Nearly two-thirds of the analyzed countries are expected to accelerate their mitigation efforts during the 2020s, which includes slower increases for those with rising emissions and faster decreases for those with falling emissions. These countries are projected to account for 63% of the group's total emissions by 2030.
• Collective emissions for the 30 countries under current policies are projected to range from a 1% decrease to a 5% increase compared to 2015 levels. Progress in specific economies, including Japan, South Africa, the UK, and the EU, is offset by emissions increases in other regions.
