For the Talanoa Dialogue: Input from the Climate Action Tracker

The Climate Action Tracker reports that current national commitments and policies are insufficient to meet the Paris Agreement's warming limits, projecting temperature increases of 3.2°C to 3.4°C by 2100. To align with a 1.5°C limit, global emissions must peak by 2020, requiring rapid decarbonization across the electricity, transport, building, industry, and agriculture sectors.

• Current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and implemented national policies are insufficient to meet the Paris Agreement's long-term warming limits. Full implementation of NDCs would result in a median global temperature increase of 3.2°C by 2100, while currently implemented policies would lead to 3.4°C.
• To meet the 1.5°C warming limit, global greenhouse gas emissions must peak around 2020, necessitating immediate and major emission cuts across all key sectors, including energy generation, road transport, buildings, industry, forestry and land use, and commercial agriculture.
• Specific sectoral requirements for decarbonization include the full decarbonization of the electricity sector by 2050, a dominant fleet share of zero-emission passenger vehicles by 2035, and all new buildings being fossil-free and near-zero energy by 2020.
