For the Talanoa Dialogue: Input from the Climate Action Tracker

The Climate Action Tracker (CAT) provides input for the Talanoa Dialogue, assessing global greenhouse gas emissions targets and the necessary sectoral transformations required to meet the Paris Agreement's warming limits.

• Current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and national policies are insufficient to meet the Paris Agreement's long-term warming limits. Full implementation of NDCs would result in a median global temperature increase of 3.2°C by 2100, while currently implemented policies would lead to an increase of 3.4°C.
• To meet the 1.5°C warming limit, global greenhouse gas emissions must peak around 2020. This requires immediate and major emission cuts across all key sectors, including energy generation, road transport, buildings, industry, forestry and land use, and commercial agriculture.
• Specific sectoral targets are required for decarbonization: the electricity sector must be fully decarbonized by 2050; zero-emission passenger vehicles must dominate the fleet and all new sales must be zero-emissions by 2035; new buildings must be fossil-free and near-zero energy by 2020 with renovation rates increasing to 3-5% by 2020; and new industrial installations must use the best available low carbon technology from 2020. In agriculture, farming practice changes alone are insufficient, requiring a holistic approach including diet changes and reduced food waste.
