Vulnerability of CDM projects for discontinuation of mitigation activities

This report, authored by NewClimate Institute and the Öko-Institut for the German Emissions Trading Authority (DEHSt), examines the vulnerability of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects to the discontinuation of greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement activities due to an oversupply of emission reduction credits in the global carbon market.

• The global carbon market is currently in an uncertain period because the supply of emission reduction credits from the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI) has exceeded the demand for those credits.
• The report aims to address three specific research objectives: determining the risk of GHG abatement discontinuation across different CDM project types, calculating the potential GHG abatement impact of supporting these projects compared to the status quo, and identifying options to ensure the short- and long-term continuation of projects at risk.
