African Activists for Climate Justice : Réalisations Phares 2021 - 2023

The African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) project, implemented by a consortium including Natural Justice, PACJA, Oxfam Novib, AYC, and FEMNET/RECODEF, reports significant progress between 2021 and 2023 in advancing climate justice. Key activities include legal training for judicial actors in West Africa, community-led audits of coal plants, and the creation of youth and women's climate networks. In Senegal, the project supported legal action against industrial pollution in Cayar, influenced the national environmental code, and trained over 700 people in legal empowerment to defend their natural capital.

• Natural Justice conducted legal empowerment sessions in five intervention zones, training 705 participants, including 285 women, to help communities defend their natural capital and environmental rights.
• The project facilitated legal action by the 'Taxawu Cayar' collective against the Touba Protéine Marine fishmeal and oil factory for violating the environmental code and polluting Lac Mbawane with wastewater.
• In December 2021, a community-led audit was completed in Bargny to document the environmental and social impacts of the Sendou coal-fired power plant.
• The project strengthened the capacity of approximately 150 local elected officials in Senegal regarding the National Determined Contribution (NDC) and climate justice in cities including Nioro, Ziguinchor, Saint-Louis, Joal, Bargny, and Kédougou.
• Between April 25 and 28, 2023, a training session on the application of environmental law was held for approximately 40 judicial actors, including magistrates and lawyers from Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
• FEMNET/RECODEF launched the AACJ Academy in 2023, training approximately 50 women from eight regional associations on feminism and innovative agricultural and livestock management to address climate challenges.
• Oxfam Senegal organized a caravan across six agro-ecological regions prior to COP27, involving 35 community movements and reaching over 500 people to catalyze a civil society movement for climate adaptation and finance.
