• Regional displacement trends in 2001 were driven by various factors: the East and Horn of Africa were affected by fighting between Ethiopia and Eritrea, violence in Sudan and Somalia, and severe droughts; the Great Lakes region faced instability from internal wars in Rwanda and Burundi and conflict in the DRC; and West Africa saw an increase in refugees and IDPs primarily from the Mano River Union countries (Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone).
• In Southern Africa, the refugee population increased by 7.8% during the first six months of 2001 to reach 345,720, largely due to protracted conflicts in Burundi, the DRC, and Angola. Zambia was the most impacted host country, receiving 17,900 new refugees from the DRC and 9,100 from Angola in that period.
