This document is a preface that describes the structural aids (executive summary, glossary, additional reading, and quotation boxes) and three suggested reading routes (for busy readers, domain experts, and general readers) for a book published by the Institute for Security Studies.

• The book incorporates four specific reading aids to assist the reader: an executive summary for condensed descriptions, glossary boxes for term definitions and author context, additional reading boxes for further information, and quotation boxes featuring experts or commentators.
• The document outlines three distinct 'reading routes' based on the reader's time and expertise: Route 1 for readers with less than ten minutes (executive summary to chapter 6), Route 2 for domain experts (executive summary, chapter 2, parts of chapter 3, and chapter 6), and Route 3 for those unfamiliar with the domain who wish to read the entire book.
• The author notes that technical terminology and 'techno-speak' are used throughout the book due to the nature of the subject matter, and these terms are written in full rather than simplified.
