UPDATE: Entry-into-Force of the African Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Pelindaba)

The Treaty of Pelindaba (African Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty) officially entered into force on 15 July 2009, following ratifications by Malawi and Burundi. The update is provided by the Institute for Security Studies as part of a Royal Norwegian Government-funded project focused on African disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

• The African Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Pelindaba) officially entered into force on 15 July 2009, following the registration of Burundi's ratification instrument by the African Union on that date. Malawi had previously ratified the treaty on 06 March 2009, with the instrument deposited on 23 April 2009.
• The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) manages a project titled "Africa’s Development and the Threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction," funded by the Royal Norwegian Government. The project's goals are to identify and strengthen Africa's role in international disarmament and non-proliferation efforts for nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, while balancing these concerns with Africa's developmental needs.
