The report argues that the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) depends heavily on improving the efficiency, capacity, and security of Africa's maritime transport and port infrastructure to facilitate the movement of goods across the continent.

• The AfCFTA creates a unified market of 1.2 billion people across 54 countries with a combined GDP of 3.4 trillion US dollars, but its success relies on the ability of African nations to enhance the efficiency and safety of maritime transport systems.
• African port infrastructure is lagging behind global standards, with only three ports appearing on the 2020 list of the world's top 100 container ports. In sub-Saharan Africa, the average cargo dwell time exceeds 20 days, compared to a global average of four days.
• Intra-African trade has historically been low, estimated at 16.6% of total continental trade in 2017 and dropping to 15% in 2019, leading countries to focus on exporting raw materials and basic goods externally.
• Africa suffers from a severe lack of ship ownership. According to UNCTAD, Nigeria is the only African country with a fleet share of 0.31% of deadweight tonnage in 2020, and Liberia is the only African nation on the list of top global countries by gross tonnage at 13%.
