OPENING REMARKS BY DR JAKKIE CILLIERS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR INSTITUTE FOR SECURITY STUDIES (ISS) ON THE OCASSION OF THE ISS NAIROBI OFFICE LAUNCH

Dr. Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), delivered opening remarks on April 13, 2010, to mark the official launch of the ISS's new and expanded office in Nairobi, Kenya.

• The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) was founded in 1991 as the 'Institute for Defense Policy' to address professionalism and constitutional control in the armed forces during South Africa's transition period. It was renamed the 'Institute for Security Studies (ISS)' in 1996 as its work became more regional in nature.
• The ISS operates as a pan-African think tank with approximately 150 staff members from 17 African countries. As of April 2010, it maintains offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi, with plans to open an office in Dakar later that year.
• The ISS is implementing two new initiatives: the African Conflict Prevention System (ACPS), which will utilize four regional hubs in Addis Ababa, Pretoria, Nairobi, and Dakar to analyze conflict across Africa, and the ISS Peace Academy (ISS PA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which provides strategic training for diplomats, military officers, and civil servants.
• The ISS's core funding and support are provided by the ISS Partnership Forum, which includes the governments of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, and the Open Society Foundation, South Africa.
