Guinea: The main challenges of the new president

This policy brief outlines the political transition in Guinea following the 2010 presidential elections and identifies five priority areas for the new president, Alpha Condé, to address systemic economic decay, insecurity, and ethno-political tensions.

• Alpha Condé was declared the winner of the Guinean presidential run-off poll on 15 November 2010 with 52.52 per cent of the votes, defeating Cellou Dalein Diallo who received 47.48 per cent. The victory was confirmed by the Supreme Court on 2 December after Diallo contested the results.
• The new president inherits a state characterized by a ruined economy, high unemployment, widespread poverty, and general insecurity. Additionally, the second round of the electoral campaign and the announcement of results triggered waves of violence, some of which had ethno-political dimensions that threatened inter-community harmony and national cohesion.
• The document identifies five priority areas for the president to address the decay of State institutions: national reconciliation, inclusive governance (treating the opposition as partners), fighting impunity and establishing the rule of law, reforming the security sector, and improving living conditions for the masses.
