Western Sahara: Understanding the roots of the conflict and suggesting a way out

The Institute for Security Studies' African Security Analysis Programme convened a roundtable seminar featuring representatives from opposing sides of the Western Sahara conflict. The event aimed to achieve an objective understanding of the protracted dispute between Morocco and the Polisario Front, which began following the Spanish withdrawal in February 1976 and has since divided the Maghreb region and the African continent.

• The conflict in Western Sahara began after Spain withdrew in February 1976 and the Moroccan government reasserted claims to the territory, leading to a divisive struggle between Rabat and the Polisario Front affecting the Maghreb and Africa.
• Despite various peace talks, plans, and proposals, a resolution to the Western Sahara dispute has not been achieved.
