Western Sahara: Understanding the roots of the conflict and suggesting a way out

This situation report describes an interactive roundtable seminar organized by the African Security Analysis Programme of the Institute for Security Studies. The seminar aimed to analyze the roots of the conflict in Western Sahara, evaluate peace proposals, and identify obstacles to resolution by bringing together representatives from opposing sides whose views reflect their respective governments' official positions.

• The conflict in Western Sahara began following the Spanish withdrawal in February 1976 and the Moroccan government's claims to the territory, leading to a divisive struggle between Rabat and the Polisario Front that has affected the Maghreb region and the African continent.
• Despite various peace talks, plans, and proposals, a resolution to the protracted conflict in Western Sahara has not been achieved.
