Background note on Africa’s Current Path Energy Future to 2043

This background note from the Institute for Security Studies projects that Africa, following its current development trajectory, will eventually become the primary global source of carbon emissions from fossil fuels, surpassing the emissions of the EU, USA, India, and China by 2061.

• Based on its current development trajectory, Africa is projected to become the primary global source of carbon emissions from fossil fuels. Specifically, its emissions are expected to exceed those of the EU in 2034, the USA in 2049, India in 2055, and China in 2061.
