The Rebirth: Tunisia’s potential development pathways to 2040

This report section analyzes Tunisia's basic infrastructure, focusing on water and sanitation, energy and electricity, and information and communications technology (ICT), as part of a broader study on development pathways to 2040.

• Tunisia has made significant progress in water and sanitation access, with only 3% of the population lacking improved sanitation facilities in 2018, compared to 20% in 2000. In 2018, 14.2% of the population lacked access to safe water, though projections suggest all Tunisians will have access by 2028 on the Current Path.
• Water resources are under strain due to population growth and agricultural demand; for example, water use increased by 12% between 2012 and 2013, primarily driven by the urban population of Tunis. This led to the first water cuts in the Greater Tunis area, which has 2.5 million people, during the summer of 2013.
